Another weekend - boy this goes by fast.

Saturday, Feb 28th and Sunday Mar. 1st or as some people say Feb 29th! (not really)

THOUGHT:  "JUST DON'T GIVE UP TRYING TO DO WHAT YOU REALLY WANT TO DO.
WHERE THERE IS LOVE AND INSPIRATION, I DON'T THINK YOU CAN GO
                         WRONG!"                                                              Ella Fitzgerald
Saturday morning we got up earlier than Peg would have liked to go the the flea market (tianguis they call them.)  We went with our friends the Andersons.  He drove and a couple of times I had to close my eyes.  He has driven in countries all over the world and I shouldn't be concerned (Egypt, Pakistan, Kazakistan, Honduras, Columbia, etc.)  He worked for the state department all over the world.  The tianguis (Tea-on-Gees - hard G) are something to behold.  We like to go there for vegetables - they are usually fresh off the farm and there is everything you could want - beans, peas, broccoli, cauliflower, potatoes, tomatoes - fruit including Guanabana, mangos, Guayaba, bananas, citrus, and millions of others.  They have craft booths.  One booth had huge sheets of Chicharron (fried pig skin).  Peg bought a skirt there and we got some veggies.  they have meat (poor scrawny chickens, pig's feet, beef, etc.) and places to stop and eat tacos, etc.  We bought some green beans, mixed veggies (pre cut broccoli, cauliflower, carrots) and cilantro along with Mangos, the skirt and 3 potted plants to put outside of our window to the world - actually window to the side of the casino that is next to us but it has a shelf to put our plants on.  We then went to a bridal shower in our spanish ward.  A gal who returned from her mission 2 months ago is getting married.  The last day of her mission she was allowed to go to the temple in Tuxtla Gutierrez.  She met a young man who was a worker in the temple and they have corresponded and got engaged.  Her mother is really sad -her daughter leaves in a week to get married and live in Tuxtla Gutierrez to someone they barely know.  I think it is a challenge for these worthy young women returning from missions to find a young man that is worthy to take them to the temple.  She is darling and I hope it works out for her.  Her father is High Priests group leader and her mother teaches the gospel essentials class in our ward.  In the afternoon I spent 2 hours trying to fill out the financial forms for my corporate church credit card.  They have  a law in Mexico that for such things for corporate credit cards that you have to have a Fractura (invoice) that is emailed to you.  So every time we go on trips (that is the only time I use the credit card) we need to have them email us a receipt and then go on computer at the end of the month and attach the email on a form with the 36 digit identifier and submit it to Bank of America (church uses Bank of America for its credit card transactions.  Turns out I have only used $3000 pesos of my $435,000 travel budget.  I better get on the stick.  We then called the Rices - they are the adventurous ones and they had gone downtown in Mexico City to see what they wanted to drag their daughters to when they come this weekend.  They were going to try out a restaurant in the Zona Rosa (night club district) so we jumped on a bus that was bumpy, rode for 10 minutes to the subway - took a subway for two stops and walked 8 blocks to meet them.  We met them by the angel of the revolution monument where we saw some limos with young women celebrating their Quinceañero (15th birthday.)  Dinner was good - we had Posole (a soup with a spicy broth, lettuce, hominy, meat - usually pork but classically from the cheeks of the pork - and lime. )  We also had quesadillas - one with cooked squash flower.  We took a taxi home and the driver had a goats full leg with hoof painted pink and purple hanging from his rear-view mirror.  We didn't get a picture of this but it is the honest truth.  We got home and tried to watch the Utes (lose) and BYU (win) and Jazz (win) on my computer.
Today was fast Sunday - there is a family here from the states in our spanish ward - the father is with the FBI in Mexico city - his wife served a spanish speaking mission.  They have been here a year.  Their 15 year old daughter gave a talk 2 weeks ago and spoke perfect spanish - wrote it herself.  today their 6 year old daughter got up to bear her testimony and didn't need any help from mom - almost perfect spanish (one ser/estar error) but blew my poor wife away.  Teach your children spanish when they are young.  There were several investigators there today - the cousin of a man who was baptized 6 weeks ago - seems really nice and enjoyed church.  We had a lazy afternoon (translate that Peg had a 90 minute nap - I got 20 minutes. )  We then met with all of the couples that live in our hotel and had dinner together.  The Toblers had two granddaughters here visiting (17 and 19 years old)  Of course I get calls at the most inopportune times as always and Peg is always telling me to wait and call them back - hard for me to do because that is why I am here - to take call for 7000 missionaries.  Sunday nights are usually spent catching up on our blogs, face timing etc.

Greg thought this was so funny to take a pic of the temps for this week here!
The temps are in centigrade!  So around 80-82 degrees!
Beautiful weather!

YAY!  Look at my new garden I plopped on the wall!
This brightens up my whole infamous window!

At the tianguis - a table of super hero!
Anyone need a superhero?

Oh GROSS!  This is a pic of chicharron!
Those big slabs to the right of the guys!
They must be like big thick potato chips!
Don't know for sure - haven't touched the stuff!
Translated - dried pig skin they sell everywhere down here!
YUM!  These two guys selling it have had a little too much of the stuff!
We watched a guy come up and buy a big chunk of it!
This stuff is past my limit!

Watching the girls celebrating their quinceañera!
The parents spend a boat load of money on
dresses, limos, tuxes, a big dinner and party!
Here they go to the Angel  monument!
It looks like the steps at the Salt Lake Temple
with all the girls in their big, colorful dresses and the guys
in their tuxes, and pics being taken everywhere!
I didn't get a pic of the monument!
I thought we would be going over there, but it didn't work out!

Here is another limo with another girl and her party friends!

We went to dinner with the Rices downtown where they are
looking for places to take their daughters to eat when they
come to visit this Friday!
You can't tell by the menu printed on the table, but they serve
posole with pig brains, other pig parts or chicken!
Guess what I got?  Chicken!
(I wonder how much pig brains got mixed in the soup anyway???)

Sister Rice is face timing her daughter to tell her about the FUN
place they found to take them to!
I won't take you there if you come visit - I promise!
Sister Rice ordered a quesadilla filled with squash flowers
as a filling!  She's nuts!  I did taste it and it wasn't bad!

Here is my dinner - to the right - posole (a soup)
with fried  corn tortillas and plenty of hot sauces to put on it!
Also a deep fried cheese quesadilla to the left!
That wasn't bad either, just greasy!
Gladly by Sunday morning I was still alive!
That's all I pray for when eating real Mexican food!
No Sunday pics!  Sorry
Nos Vamos!
