Greg planned a huge medical seminar for all of the 80 service missionaries in the country for this weekend. It was held at the chapel that is next to the Mexico City Temple.
I am only making one entry for the whole seminar. It turned out to be a success - almost!!
Only about half of the people came that said they would be there. Also 2 speakers on the program didn't show up! Grrrrr! Why can't these Mexicans be more responsible! Greg worked it out and they got out a little earlier than planned, but everyone that did come had a good time and learned a lot. The meeting started on Thursday with lunch at 3 pm in the temple cafeteria. We had a good old Mexican food meal of rice and beans and cooked chicken parts! We also had a salad and napal (which I thought was green beans , but is actually cactus cut up!) Not so great! Flan for dessert.
The meeting then started with Pres. De Hoyos - the area president speaking for 35 min. He is hard to understand so I am not sure what he even spoke about! Greg also spoke for a minute and then the training stuff started so I left. We stayed with the Smiths for Thursday and Friday nights. They were kind enough to babysit me and let me hang with them at their house whenever I wanted! I went back over there and we had a very nice visit and I worked on my afghan I was making!
I walked back over to the meetings to meet Greg for dinner - another Mexican meal! Why can't they try an Italian meal or Chinese or something?? Why does it always have to be Mexican food???
I didn't eat much so I can't even remember what we had!
The last seminar of the day was how to do ingrown toenails. The doctor was from Oaxaca and we had an elder that had had ingrown toenails on both sides before and it was coming back. The Elder had prayed that they could be fixed so they wouldn´t come back. Little did he know how his prayer would be answered. The doctor made a large cut and looked like he almost cut all the way through the toe - mostly to completely expose the nail bed. He removed the nail bed on that side and stitched the elder up. His toe was a little smaller. He then had one of the doctors do the other side (see one, do one, teach one) and the poor elder had to come over to the dining hall in a wheelchair. We were about to send him home when we noticed one of his surgical sites was really bleeding. We took him back and put in a mother 3 stitches and had him stay over at the dormitories on the temple square. He wasn't given much for pain and did not have a pleasant night. It turned out ok and he won't get them back
This is what the Mexico City Temple looks like at 12:30 in the morning and 6:30 in the morning! |
We got back to the Smiths and they had planned a movie night for us. The Smiths, Pococks, Zapatas, and Anthonys were all there and we watched Taken 2. Some of the sisters had made different kinds of fancy popcorn - caramel, peanut butter and regular so we had plenty of treats! Good times!
Friday was an all-day affair for Greg. He was up and out by 7 am for a Mexican breakfast. I stayed with the Smiths all morning and had pancakes! Good decision! I did meet Greg for lunch at 3 again, but again - the choices were quite tough! Greg got back a little earlier tonight so we watched another movie - the Mask of Zorro! Another fun night of partying! I am liking this mission more and more!!
Saturday Greg was up and gone again and the meetings ended around 1 pm. I couldn't take another Mexican meal so we took the Smiths to lunch for their hospitality this weekend. We ended up at Applebees having salads. That was the best meal I had had in days!! Greg was glad the seminar was over. Everyone that showed up had a good time and learned some things so it was a success.
We got back to our place around 4:30. The Andersons called and wanted to go to the movie - Tomorrowland in English at 5:40 so we jumped back in the car and went to the movie. It was an OK movie I guess. We stopped at Johnny Rockets for a sandwich after, stopped at the store and got home at 11:00 pm. Greg is pooped and off to bed!

Sunday, May 31st
Today was a regular Sunday at church. Not much happened except we had to visit our poor crazy missionary. Greg found out today that he gets to escort him home to Denver tomorrow. This Elder's dad showed up at the hospital on Thursday so he will be traveling with them. That should be a big help if the missionary gets stressed or out of control. I am nervous for Greg! We called Sara who is in Denver with Jason and they will pick him up at the airport and take him to dinner, then back to his hotel so he can fly back to Mexico on Tuesday morning! Best of luck to you Greg!!!
