HAPPY HALLOWEEN

Saturday, Oct 31st   Happy Halloween!

I am sad today because I cannot get in the mood of Halloween.  Most of the kids face timed me with the kids in their costumes.  I am missing this time at home with them.  I love Halloween!  Greg had to get up at 5 to take a missionary home to San Antonio Texas.  There was a whole group of us that had planned on a great outing for today.  We rented a big van and 15 of us went to San Angel to a open art market with little artisan shops all around the square.  We had a great time wandering around looking at art and Dia de la Muerto stuff (Halloween stuff)! It was a beautiful sunny day and fun to be with our mission friends!  It was a long day and we were all tired by the time we got home!  Greg made it home around 9 pm, so he even had a longer day!  The Newmans face timed me after their trick or treating and everyone got tons of candy so happy days ahead with sugar!!

Our van we drove around the city in today - all 15 of us
We missed Greg cause he had to take a missionary home
to San Antonio Texas

A blooming poinsettia tree!

These giant Katrinas- day of the dead
ladies are everywhere.

They celebrate day of the dead on Nov 2nd
not Halloween even though everywhere we
went today people were dressed up in costumes
with faces painted and their dogs dressed up as well!

Brother Hacking has to stop at every candy shop!

An old home of some rich guy from the 1700's
with a lady selling her wares on the side of the
street.  She is holding her child while she sits there
Both of them will stay there all day!

I love these beaded things.
This deer is made of beeswax with
thousands of little colorful beads placed on it!

The inside of the Cathedral
They were preparing for a christening of
a pretty little baby girl.

These kids were stripping the marigold petals off
the stem to build a big shrine for day of the dead

They had bags and bags of marigold petals

The grocery bags over on the side are filled with food
that they put out on their shrine for the dead people
that come back to eat their favorite food

A huge grapefruit tree

This poor little guy begging by the gate to the church

Part of the Cathedral wall!
I love the old brick

This is how they make their shrines
which are all over the place on the sidewalks

These are the only two witches we could find wandering around.
I guess they don't believe in witches!!

This was a display in a store.
They go all out!

Some of us coming out of this outside market

Another big dia de los muertos display
The orange on the walkway are all
marigold petals.

They add candles, skulls, food, flowers and all kinds of things
to their shrines

and crosses!

I like this couple made out of clay

This is one huge piñata

I like this couple too!

Elder Hacking taking a pic of us

Sister Griffin and Me taking a pic of him back!

Another display!  I like the bike riders!

This couple was dressed up and walking around the streets.
They loved getting their pics taken

With the Griffins

with the Munoz

This is suppose to be a big Cathedral with a convent in it
but we never found the convent

The inside

The amount of gold in all the churches
in this country is incredible!

I like that they have Mary and Jesus here!

Off to the side of the big Cathedral is this side
little shrine.

Here it is up close with candles, flowers, dolls, cutout papers
a big basket of food and a standing skelton
under this

The Savior carrying his cross!
Go figure!

This is the path to the shrine with palm fronds
and flowers and marigold petals and food along the way!

One tradition is to eat pan de los muertos
Dry bread with sugar on the outside
you are also suppose to dunk it in hot chocolate
on Nov 2nd.  There is this bread all over this country!

Here is the confessional.  The priest sits in
the archway place and you can confess by
sitting on the space on the right side!

I am looking for the place where you can pay
to have your sins forgiven!
No more worries after that!

Here is another set up.  I don't understand why they
put dead mannequins in glass and dress them up!

A sweet little woman outside this church.

Here we are sitting with backs to the road
at the restaurant outside

This guy was singing to us
and saying funny things
(I caught about 1/2 of what he said)

Our group for lunch

Some chili poblano filled with who knows what for lunch!

This is a torta with pork and a red sauce
This is what I got and it tasted pretty good!
Lots better than the previous pic!

A big fountain in the town square

This is hilarious!  We were waiting for our van to pick us up
and up drives this taxi with all of these balloons tied
to the inside of the car!  I have no idea how they could drive with
all of these balloons.  This taxi needs to be in the movie - Up!

This utility truck was driving around with this dummy
(could have been a real dummy) stuck to the
front of the truck!  Happy Halloween!

You can see the traffic jam that is happening and this
poor guy is just trying to get his clean up cart through the mess!
Fun day!!!!

Sunday, Nov. 1st

Fast Sunday - wonderful spirit as always.  There are never any big pauses, we don't hear from the same people every week.  The testimonies are heartfelt and beautiful.  We had dinner with everyone at the Griffin's place because it is larger than ours.  Choir practice lasted until after 8 then we came home exhausted.
