Spending time with our mission president friends & WAY TO GO BEKA!!

Saturday July 11, 2015

THOUGHT:  "We have every reason to rejoice and little reason to fear. If we follow the promptings of the Spirit, we will be safe, whatever the future holds. We will be shown what to do."
                                                                                                                      Boyd K. Packer

We received a call from President Stutzenegger from the Southeast mission that he was organizing a trip to the "Sabado Bazaar" in Coyoacan with two other mission presidents and he wanted us to join them.  We were excited - we love the Stutzeneggers and Titensors and it presented a great opportunity to meet the Meachams, new to the Mexico City South mission.  The bazaar is held in a place call San Angel, an older well-to-do area of Mexico City.  There is a large art showing there on Saturdays - lots of beautiful art.  Tons of artisan things and we had a wonderful buffet.  Poor President Meacham (brand new) got a ticket the night before for driving in the bus lane.  We have made it 8 months without ever being pulled over - I think it might give her a heart attack.  We then ran over to a hospital to see a sister with abdominal pain - turned out to have a hernia and is doing fine now after surgery.  We got home late and it seems like we have been gone forever.

An old fancy building with this buffet in the middle of it.
There are little shops all around this square

I like this huge flower/fruit arrangement in the middle
of this place

Great Mexican music by this xylophone

A very old church in the square
There was a baby christening going on inside.
People can just walk in and out while this is going on
The baby looks beautiful with her tons of black hair
and a dress that hangs almost to the floor!

We got to walk to church!  (All our kids can tell if I am writing or Peg is writing by the number of exclamation marks.)  We have been driving Elder Anderson who has a bad back because he cannot walk to church.  It was nice to be out and exercising.  Our Bishop gave the Mexican version of the talk about families, marriage and the temple.  There are homosexuals in Mexico but they are still very underground.  95% of the people have very strong opinions about marriage between a man and woman being ordained of God.  It took more time than usual to make my report to Elder Schwitzer - busy week.  Our senior sister here in the hotel was back in the hospital with another kidney stone and now has two stents - one on each side.  An Elder was shot with a pellet gun in Tijuana just as we were leaving.  An elder took off at 2 in the morning to go to the bus station to go home.  This one was particularly sad - his parents abandoned him at age 8 and he had to make a living on his own. He will be going home to no home.  We have an elder with a cavitary lesion on his chest xray (worry TB.) We had dinner with the Griffins, she made it home from the hospital but did not go to church due to ongoing pain.

Very uneventful day.  I had a lot to catch up with on the computer and Peg worked on the blog - last week in Tijuana.  We walked down to pay our WIFI bill (whopping $30 a month that has to be paid in person.)  We went with the Hackings - senior couple from Brigham City who are the welfare couple.  We ate at La Onda - our favorite taco shop.  On the way home I got my bimonthly roses - pretty red tipped yellow ones.  I got a nap - hard getting back from pacific time zone.  Elder Pieper from the first quorum of 70's is in our area presidency and he taught at family home evening.  The treats were assigned to the Matas who were called to the Ciudad Juarez temple presidency and left.  Sister Pieper is the daughter of Elder Theodore Tuttle who was a very good friend of President Packer and their families were close.  Because of that Elder Pieper had a very close relationship with Elder Packer.  We talked about many of his talks that were so well written and timely.  The atonement was always weaved into his talks.  He had some classics - the talk on chastity to young men at a priesthood session in the early 70's.  The talk about crocodiles.  He was very observant and related those to gospel topics.  When Elder Bednar was here he said that the Book of Mormon is full of prophets' final counsel to the church before they died and he said we should pay attention to the last talks of our modern day prophets - he was talking about Elder Perry's last talk but it applies just as well to Elder Packer's.  It is interesting that Elder Packer and Monson were called as General authorities in the early 60's.  The next apostle in seniority is Elder Nelson who was called in 1984 - that is 20 years difference.  We really will have a new generation because after Elder Nelson, Oaks, Hales and Scott we are into the mid 90's for the rest of the Apostles.  Elder Packer was a general authority the fourth longest of anyone since the restoration of the church as he served as an assistant to the 12 before he was called to the Twelve so he has been a general authority longer than President Monson.  Treats were great - way to go Peg.  Everyone - read Elder Packer's and Elder Perry's last talks again.

Greg took a pic of the wiring set up at La Onda
where we were eating outside on the balcony with the Hackings!

My beautiful 8 month roses!

Tuesday, July 14th

Today is a very exciting day.  We were taking the Griffins over to the doctors office for a check up on her kidney stones.  Poor girl - she has been in so much pain with those darn things.  Beka called us on the way to the doctors with some great news!  She got a call this morning and was accepted into the Elan PA school in North Carolina.   She starts in January.  That is so very far away!  I'm not sure how I feel about that!  She had just put in her applications for all the other schools yesterday.  Hopefully she will still continue to apply at closer schools!  CONGRATULATIONS BEKA!  You worked hard for this!  We spent an hour at the doctors and then took the Griffins to Chilis for lunch.  Sister Griffin had not been out for almost a month, so she was very happy to get some (fresh) air and different scenery.  We went to Walmart and we got a gift for all the senior couples.  We bought some plastic chairs that we brought back to our place and put on the roof on this dang hotel!  It is very nice up there and I hope to be spending lots of time up there!  I did sit in the sunshine for about 15 min and then had to get on with my day.  We had an easy dinner and went to walk Sister Anderson home from the church after her meeting.  She was almost home so we didn't get a very long walk in, but we took her up to see the surprise on the roof and she loved it.  We sat and visited for a long while.  The temperature is perfect here in Mexico right now.

My new chair and table!
Just big enough to hold my diet coke!!
Look no railings around the roof!
Fun!!!
